Upset that his 7-year-old son wouldn’t wear a Green Bay Packers jersey during the team’s playoff victory Saturday, a man restrained the boy for an hour with tape and taped the jersey onto him.

How bad are the Knicks?

Bad enough that people are dying from embarrassment…

One of the most difficult periods of Stephon Marbury’s life took a painful turn last night when his father, Don, died after attending the Knicks’ game at Madison Square Garden, the team spokesman Jonathan Supranowitz confirmed.

A Michigan police officer died and dozens of others needed medical care while running the Chicago Marathon as record heat and smothering humidity forced race organizers to shut down the course midway through the event.

Litigous? Nah. Not Americans....

A disgusted Jets season ticket-holder went on the offensive yesterday against the New England Patriots over the infamous Videogate scandal.

Princeton lawyer Carl Mayer filed a class-action suit in Newark Federal Court against the New England Patriots and coach Bill Belichick because a video assistant filmed Jets coaches giving defensive signals last month.

“We want to find out the truth,” Mayer said.

He’s seeking unspecified damages, perhaps refunding the cost of tickets to fans who sat through seven New England-Jets games at Giants Stadium since 2000.

To some Oklahoma football fans, there are things that just aren’t done in the heart of Sooner Nation, and one of them is to walk into a bar wearing a Texas Longhorns T-shirt. That’s exactly what touched off a bloody skirmish that left a Texas-shirt-wearing fan nearly castrated and an Oklahoma fan facing aggravated assault charges that could put him in prison for up to five years.

aka “how not to get elected in massachusetts”

What kind of world is this if Tom Brady is not absolutely ashamed of himself? He, a grown man, is showing the maturity of a hormone-driven teenager. Tom Brady apparently has no regard for traditional virtue or Biblical morality. Am I suggested that we hold up professional athletes to a higher standard? No, I am suggesting that we all be held up to higher standards.

Stupid Baseball...

Posted by spooneybarger Sat, 19 May 2007 18:29:00 GMT

One scout says the Royals do not have a single player on the team with above-major-league-average speed. Not one. The Royals have made up for this liability by running into a lot of outs. The best/worst so far happened earlier in the week against Oakland when Peña was on second and a fly ball was hit just behind the bag. Oakland second baseman Mark Ellis caught the ball about 30 feet behind the bag, and Peña, for reasons that will only be apparent to him, decided to tag up and force a throw. He did force it — Ellis threw the ball to the pitcher covering second, and he tagged out Peña. The replays showed that Peña was probably not out — the tag was late. But Buddy Bell did not argue the call, and afterward, he offered my favorite quote of 2007. He said, “I don’t argue for stupid baseball.”

scaring the asians, ruining the economy…

MGM Mirage Inc.’s chief executive said Thursday that the NBA All-Star game potentially hurt its earnings and soured the company on a franchise coming to Las Vegas.

...

The company said the earnings shortfall was partially due to the rowdy crowd that surrounded the NBA All-Star game in February, which fell on the same weekend as Chinese New Year, a crucial period for bringing in high-rollers from Asia.

“The gang-bangers and others who came for purposes other than attending the game, they weren’t very good for Las Vegas,” Lanni told The Associated Press.

Lanni said there was little action on the gambling tables the day of the game.

“In talking to our casino hosts, a number of people stayed in their villas and suites. They felt uncomfortable,” he said.

Too severe?

Posted by spooneybarger Wed, 28 Mar 2007 09:29:07 GMT

Former Major League baseball pitcher Ugueth Urbina was sentenced to 14 years in prison for the attempted murder of five workers on his family’s ranch, the Attorney General’s Office announced Wednesday.

Urbina, a former pitcher with the Montreal Expos, Boston Red Sox, Texas Rangers, Florida Marlins, Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies, was also found guilty of illegal deprivation of liberty and violating a prohibition against taking justice into his own hands during a dispute over a gun on Oct. 16, 2005, according to a statement from the Attorney General’s Office.

The 32-year-old free agent was accused of joining a group of men in attacking and injuring workers with machetes and pouring gasoline on them at his family’s ranch, located about 25 miles south of Caracas.

“The ruling was too severe,” said Jose Antonio Baez, a former attorney who represented Urbina.

...

“Yes, I regret it. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said I hate gay people or anything like that,” he said. “That was my mistake.”

While the Jazz lead the Northwest Division, Andrei Kirilenko continues to struggle (9.2 points after averaging 15.3 last season). But the coaching staff thinks it has pinpointed Kirilenko’s problem: too much reading. Kirilenko’s pregame routine includes reading Russian-language novels at his locker while his teammates are out on the court warming up. When asked about the coach’s odd request that he stop reading, Kirilenko’s told the Salt Lake Tribune, “Books are bad, headphones are good.” Just don’t let any English teachers know about the Jazz’s policy

someone get Isiah Thomas a dictionary…

When asked early in the day about any feedback from Dolan, Thomas hinted the owner was soon to speak publicly. “We talk a lot,” Thomas said. “I’m not privy to discuss conversations he and I have.

then again, the way he runs the knicks, maybe he really isn’t privy to hos own conversations… maybe one side of his brain is keeping it secret from the other, maybe dolan has his mind wiped every night….
